Better machine utilization thanks to telematics
CEplus solution facilitates planning and controlling at Porr AG
Worldwide operating Viennese company relies on individual telematics system withsplash-proof and heat-resistant hardware for international operation
Vienna, 18.07.2016 (msc). Companies with locations in German-speaking countries, whichare searching for a suitable telematics solution, have a large selection. But if you have alsosubsidiaries in foreign countries, for example in Eastern Europe, must ensure that thetechnology is also works there. Sometimes companies and suppliers learn with each other, and in theideal case the end result is the optimal solution.When Porr AG set out to search for a telematics solution, the employees were stillcompletely newcomers to the field, remembers Werner Zenz, Managing Director of PorrEquipment. Services. The internationally operating construction company based in Viennahas been in existence for more than 145 years and is one of the leading companies inAustria and Europe. Operation at European level
A telematics solution for construction machinery and commercial vehicles was now indemand, says Zenz, who is the responsible for the telematics project in the company. TheViennese wanted their own solution and spent three years looking for a system that theycould install themselves. When selecting the partner, it was important to find an area-wideprovider which can also cover other countries, says Zenz. After all, Porr is also active inother European countries, for example in Romania or the Czech Republic. Also thetechnology of SIM cards is a "huge topic" for Porr. Normally, the standard SIM cards wouldbe used but at the Austrian construction company, the cards must also be able to deal withenvironmental influences such as temperature, i.e. even extreme values such as 120degrees Celsius. Porr's equipment is outdoors, exposed to heat and vibration and iscleaned with a high-pressure cleaner. "We wanted to have everything from one source”,says Zenz. "We wanted a partner who already had experience with telematics and whoresponds to our needs." The Viennese found a partner at Telekom Austria and CEplus asthe telematics provider.
The task area of the new solution
There were several main reasons for the Viennese to rely on telematics. First of all it wasabout the planning the maintenance of equipment and vehicles, as well as the utilization ofthe maintenance centers. Until then, maintenance was carried out virtually at theoperator's call, Zenz remembers. Now there is automatically an information in the system,that maintenance is due again. It is therefore easier to plan, guarantee intervals are nolonger exceeded, and costs can be saved. The control of cost blocks (e.g. fuel,maintenance, etc.) per operating hour or kilometer is also an important tool to save cash:“You can recognize changes very quickly." Also theft protection and tracking via GPS aremade possibel via the CEplus solution, also early recognition of machine downtimes. Thenecessary evaluations can then be determined in the control center, explains Zenz: "Whyis this thing standing?" With the new telematics system, more machines would now bemoved in the group to where there is a need at the moment.
No superfluous data
In return, Porr waived information that might be important to other companies in theindustry but aisundesirable for the Viennese, such as the oil temperature. "We want toknow the mileage and the operating hours for construction machinery, we don't need therest" - unnecessary flood of data should not arise. The development of the suitablesolution is "anything but easy," reports Zenz, "after all, the devices in the VW bus had towork just as well like in a roller in civil engineering. "We didn't want any differences there.What was installed in Berlin should also work in the same way when the machine is usedin Austria. Not visible from the outside the devices were installed from autumn 2014 on -splash-proof, with SIM cards, which made several millions of accesses possible. „Unbureaucratic and uncomplicated" support
Zenz and his employees felt well taken care of by CEplus, which also has its headquartersin Austria, between Salzburg and Linz. There were fixed contact persons and quick help,"unbureaucratic and uncomplicated". During the development of the Porr solution, allproject participants "learned it the hard way", smiles Zenz, but the effort was worth it: "Wesee that it brings a lot." In the meantime, the telematics solutions have been installed in4000 devices. It started with 100 units installed in Germany and Austria. "We wanted tosee whether it delivers what it promises and whether the hardware works," says Zenz.
Since January 2016, 4000 units have been installed, which have been in real operationsince May. Germany. Austria and the Czech Republic are 100 per cent equipped, but thedevices are also running partly in Romania and Poland. Planning and Controlling - thesetwo points are named by Zenz as the areas in which a significant change for the betterwas achieved. In the previous at Porr, devices worth 4 million Euros were shifted acrossthe Porr Group - thanks to the telematics of CEplus the need was recognized.
